I was lucky enough to be raised by him and my mom Betty for many years. I didn’t realize that they would both put so much music into my mind, but they did. My dad's mother got pregnant in Ft. Worth, Texas by my grandpa A.D. Washington. She was from a large family and her parents died when they were really young. There were 9 sisters total, and the older sisters took care of the younger sisters. The oldest sister insisted my grandma come to California with her after she got pregnant. My dad was born in San Mateo on February 14, 1934. My dad met my mom when he was in high school. He had played the piano since he was very young. By the time he was in junior high he was playing all the dances at rec centers in San Francisco and at The Booker T. Hotel. He had a band that featured Johnny Mathis on vocals. My mom always told me my dad was a great piano player and she hated when he switched to organ. He won the battle of the bands event and got to play with Lionel Hampton.
